The students in Mrs. Pam Lovell's AP European History class at Clinton County High School participated in an Enlightenment Salon on Monday, December 11, 2017. Enlightenment salons were held during the 17th and 18th centuries, and were social gatherings where educated or "enlightened" individuals discussed and debated important topics of the time. At the gatherings, a host or hostess chose the topics for discussion. In the CCHS simulation, students were assigned a character to portray and completed research on their characters so they could make inferences as to how he or she would feel about topics such as religion, justice, absolute monarchy, government, and science. The students also dressed in character and introduced themselves, giving a brief overview of their opinions and feelings about issues of the day. After the introductions, students enjoyed refreshments (hot chocolate and sugar cookies) while they stayed in character and engaged in lively debate.
