Albany Elementary School 4th grade students competed on Saturday, October 15th in the third annual STEMShot rocket competition at Western Kentucky University’s Center for Research & Development. During this year’s competition, 50 plastic cups were arranged in the shape of a square at a distance of 70 feet from the rocket launcher. The teams were challenged with firing their paper rockets at the cups and knocking down as many as they could. The students had three chances to adjust their angle and direction and score as many points as possible. Eleven teams from three school districts participated, including six teams from AES. Albany Elementary science teacher Mr. Terry Shelly has attended this competition with teams of students from AES for the past three years. Commenting on how the students enjoy this hands-on experience, Mr. Shelley said, “They have fun with it and it’s much better than worksheets.” The strategy for AES for this year included attaching larger fins to the rockets. Mr. Shelley explained, “With those larger fins, we were just trying to take up as much space as possible.” Albany Elementary won big this year, taking home awards for the top three teams. The Diamond Dawgs knocked down 26 cups and won the competition. Congratulations to the AES teams for all the hard work, great sportsmanship, and setting the standard so high for next year!
